Going Down to the River to Pray
Camping along a river is one of the most relaxing ways to do it! The easy availability of drinking water, the white noise of the moving water, and opportunities for a quick swim to cool off make temporary living outdoors very comfortable.
As you approach the river prepare your heart and listen to your favorite worship music. Particularly any about the classic “Going Down to the River to Pray”

The foundation of this trip is how rivers are powerful symbols of God's provision in both the Old and New Testaments. Rivers represent the flow of God's grace and power that restores our souls.
Psalm 1:3 “That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”
Explore. Spend some time in quiet reflection along the banks or even in the river. Consider it as a symbol of spiritual nourishment, a constant source of life. Just as the trees around you thrive, so too does a person who is close to God. Allow the calmness of the water to represent God’s peace entering your heart.
John 7:37-39 “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
Jesus offers “living water,” a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Give thanks for the eternal and abundant life that comes from knowing Christ and how it flows in your life. Take time to pray by the “river”, entering into God’s presence while you are there. Let it be an intentional retreat from the noise of life to listen to God's voice, lay down your burdens, and renew your strength. As you wait on Him at the river, exchange your weariness for His strength, your burdens for His peace, and your despair for His hope. So, let us come to the river, draw near to God, and find rest for our souls.
Psalm 23:1-3 “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.”
Renewal by the river isn’t just a one-time event—it’s a continuous journey. God promises that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). Just as rivers never stop flowing, God's grace, mercy, and strength are always available to us. Remember this time in your mind at home. Returning to the river of God’s presence in prayer, day after day, strengthens us to face the challenges of life with courage and hope.
2nd Corinthians 4:16-18 "So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison."
